SEN Teaching Assistant

Location: Gateshead
Start Date: ASAP / February Start Available
Contract: Full Time, Term Time Only
Pay: £90 – £110 per day

GSL Education are working in partnership with a specialist provision in Gateshead to recruit a committed and compassionate Teaching Assistant to join their team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about supporting children and young people with additional needs in a highly supportive and structured environment.

About the School

This specialist community provision supports students aged 4-16 with complex learning needs, including Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), communication difficulties, and associated social, emotional, and behavioural needs. The school offers a calm, nurturing and highly personalised approach to learning, with small class sizes, strong pastoral support and a focus on emotional regulation, independence and life skills. Staff work closely as a multidisciplinary team to ensure every learner is supported to achieve their full potential.

The Role

As a Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teaching staff to support pupils both in and out of the classroom. You may provide 1:1 support or work with small groups, helping students to engage with learning, manage transitions and develop social and communication skills.

Key Responsibilities

• Supporting pupils with ASC and additional learning needs across KS1, KS2, KS3 and KS4
• Providing 1:1 and small group support in lessons and intervention sessions
• Supporting emotional regulation, behaviour and engagement using a trauma-informed approach
• Assisting with differentiated learning activities and practical tasks
• Working closely with teachers, SEN staff and external professionals
• Promoting a safe, positive and inclusive learning environment

As the Ideal Teaching Assistant, you should have

• Experience working with children or young people with SEND (ASC experience desirable)
• Calm, patient and resilient approach
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills
• A genuine passion for inclusive education and pupil wellbeing
• Relevant qualifications (TA qualification, childcare, psychology or similar) desirable
• Willingness to support personal development and independence skills
