Deputy Director of Education

As a senior leader in the Diocesan Board of Education, you will be a Christian with an active faith and comfortable leading in an environment where reflection and empathy underpin our work. (Schedule 9, paragraph 1 of the Equality Act 2010 applies).

Position: Deputy Director of Education (Church School Effectiveness)

Location: Oxford/hybrid

Hours: Full-time, 37 hours per week

Salary: £82,000 – £87,000 per annum (dependant on experience and to be agreed in conjunction with the successful candidate)

Contract: Permanent

Start Date: 1st September 2024

The Role

Leading a team of Diocesan School Advisers, the priorities for the successful candidate will be to oversee and coordinate the support for the development of church schools as providers of high-quality educational and spiritual standards and contribute to the effectiveness of ODBE s services and operations.

Duties and responsibilities include:

• To shape and implement the strategic formulation of the Diocesan Board of Education (ODBE) policy, as part of the Strategic Leadership Team and work in partnership with the Director of Education to ensure the effectiveness and delivery of current and future Diocesan services to schools and academies
• To support the development of church schools as providers of high-quality educational and spiritual standards
• To oversee educational excellence and the overall effectiveness of diocesan church schools including developing their Christian distinctiveness
• To lead, co-ordinate, monitor (line-manage), and assure the quality of the work of the advisory team whilst undertaking wider agreed tasks that support the work of ODBE and their own professional development

About You

A practising Christian in sympathy with the Anglican tradition with the ability to articulate the Christian faith, you will have:

• Proven recent track record as a Headteacher in a state school or academy
• Excellent classroom practitioner with Qualified Teacher Status
• Demonstrable experience of leading school effectiveness and improvement across a wide range of schools as well as in individual schools
• A deep understanding and appreciation of the context within which ODBE operates.
• Excellent understanding and knowledge of the world of primary education
• An understanding of the application of the Ofsted and SIAMS inspection frameworks
• Wide experience of leading and managing staff and a commitment to their development both individually and as a team.
• Strong financial budgeting and management skills including income generation.
• Ability to draw up policy documents, reports, and briefings.
• ICT literate and willing to embrace new technologies.

The Organisation

The Diocesan Board of Education covers the three counties of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, and Oxfordshire. It serves 285 schools more than any other in the Church of England. In addition, they work in partnership with 9 local authorities and 21 multi-academy trusts. There are circa 60,000 children educated in Church of England Schools across the Diocese.

An Enhanced DBS Disclosure with barring check will be required for this position.
